Vinyl Releases: June - July 2002 updated:15/04/2003

Tony Senghore What Is It / What It Is is released this week. It is a techy R&B number, very catchy and addictive, but just in case you think we are going all Destiny's Child on ya, then check the three dancefloor monster remixes from Laid, Martin Venetjoki and Tony Senghore himself. And just in case you think its rubbish, here's who likes it - New Yorks DJ Jonene, Audio Soul Project's Mazi, Damien Harris, Jacques Lu Cont, Ian Pooley, Yousef, Plus Craig Richards And Lee Burridge got caught fighting over who would play which mix at the bomb in Nottingham!!! Well that’s what Paper say, and we agree, a damn fine double pack, the labels first and its also their 90th 12" release, an excuse for cake perhaps?

STEFAN GOLDMAN The Shinc Shnac EP 12"
(Classic Music Company)
Stalwart of the Berlin house scene: Stefan Goldmann is renowned as one of the one of the new school exponents of Germany’s burgeoning click house scene. After Classic's previous success with German artists: Markus Nikolai, Tiefschwarz, Isolée and Losoul, Classic seemed the perfect home for Stefan's innovate and distinctive production techniques. Stefan has previously released under his Simitli moniker on Luke Solomon & Justin Harris’ Music For Freaks and his heavily spun mix of Turner’s Been Out. The Shnic Shnac EP is an introductory release, containing four superbly crafted club cuts. We open with Missing Days, a funked-out infectious dubby groove full of space, simple but really effective on the floor. Say What, then picks up the baton and jacks it up. Possibly the most floor friendly of the four, and already a firm favourite with the above jocks. Here Stefan seems to have mastered the art of dropping vocal shouts and stabs into the mix to raise attention and hit the floor with some heavy bass. On the flip we have That Ghost, featured on Luke Solomon’s Thanks For Coming By mix-CD, its groove will tear you up, fierce and yet somehow smooth the bass will swallow you whole. Shrimp rounds the package off, a rattling percussive number with Stefan’s deft production touches and intricate beats

HI LO Feverish (Swag Remixes) 12"
(Music For Freaks)
Feverish first saw light of day on a limited edition 12 inch from Hi-Lo’s own grow! Records in 2000. Of the lucky few who got their mits on imports. Hi-Lo aka Tin (Martin Retschitzegger) and Duke (Michael Peter) formed in 1995 in Vienna after years of putting on some of the best techno and house parties across Europe. Now based in Berlin they continue to release on their prolific grow! Records. Feverish, is a fresh modern funk track with distinctively sly female vocals and a gritty house beat to match. This new package includes two exclusive mixes from Chris Duckenfield’s SWAG, an incredible tweaked new vocal mix reminiscent of an early Roach Motel work by Farley and Heller and rough dub for those edgier moments. Both of which are sure to do the boompty duty on the dancefloor and to be a highlight of any discerning jocks set.

MIM PROJECT Where You At Now? 12"
Mim is songstress Miriam Grey! The sound of Mim has been described as 'Sade meets Tracey Thorn'. The sublime creaminess of her voice means Mim has the potential to inherit those artist’s enormous markets. Paired with UK producer James Reynolds, the English duo went to New York to hook up with Hysteria head honcho, Eric Kupper, and created the lush recordings which now receive his deep remix treatment, the product of an intensive recording project initiated by Defected Records UK and in conjunction with Hysteria Records / Productions. Mim's gorgeous voice flies over Kupper’s remix, this is for the deeper big room audiences / DJ's. Also comes complete with a killer harmonica dub that stops traffic!!!

AVALON FEAT EMMA Take Me Higher 12"
Currently more than a little bit popular thanks to her collaboration with Mousse T, Ms. Landford stays with the Brit Soulful Garage boys for Take Me Higher. Take Me Higher combines Prelude style disco inspired verses with a catchy as you can imagine chorus and whole sections designed to be filtered to bits. The bassline, which drives the whole thing along, has, we think, been inspired by George Duke's seminal jazz funk classic I Want You For Myself. This a limited edition 1-sided sampler

(Glasgow Underground)
At the beginning of 2001, Glasgow Underground released Phatt Life (the debut long-player from Romanthony’s R&B/House project. Following the release Cheri Dennis, the Phatt Pussycat vocalist was invited to join Sean ‘Puffy’ Coombs to record with him on his P-Diddy & The Bad Boy Family long-player The Saga Continues. She accepted and starred on the tracks So Complete and Back now for Good. The initial plan was to release several singles from the album with Roman taking care of mixing duties on each. Daft Punk’s One More Time threw those tactics out the window. Not that the seven-figure publishing advance Roman got wasn’t a good thing, it just gave him a much more relaxed view on recording deadlines! Fast-forward 18 months to the present day and Roman finally delivers. Was it worth the wait? We think so. 2 B Near U was one of Roman’s favourite cuts from the album and was the first track he wanted to get back up on the mixing board. On his Sonic Fury Mix Roman takes Cheri’s plaintive vocals and works them into a huge wall of house rhythms. In one of his most intriguing works to date, blistering beats, flaming chords and a firing bass section combine to make one of the most instantly powerful mixes ever to come out of When In Rome studios. Whether or not it will be too daunting for most DJs to contemplate remains to be seen. Whatever they say about it though it is further proof that Romanthony is always one to be watched!

SHARAM JEY & NICK K Don’t Lie… Again 12"
(Hooj Tunes)
Just over two years ago Hooj underwent a bit of an artistic revamp. New sleeves, a smaller, relocated stickman and a spanking new font replaced the tried and tested formula and the first release to be all togged up and ready to go was Sharam Jey & Nick K’s Don’t Lie. The record buying public were seemingly unable to find the track on the shelves in its new sleeve and we thought that was a bit of a crime considering how much we all loved the track here – Hooj Tunes. Two years on and the sleeve issue is but a distant memory, so Hooj approached Sharam and Nick to go back to their criminally overlooked cut and give Don’t Lie a new reworking for 2002 - which they did with aplomb. A la the original release, Don’t Lie… Again is a one disc affair, with two new mixes; one from Sharam, the other from Nick K. On the A, Sharam’s mix phattens up the bass and beats as the crunchy, lively drums and low, swelling bottom end come together with a twinkling hook, while Nick K’s remix on the flip takes things into tribal territory adding a touch more punctuation and groove.

BIG DADDY KANE Playdafunk 12"
Vocodered filtered disco delight that's made for Sunday afternoons zonked out of your brain. Also got plenty of attention on CDR at the Miami Winter Music Conference parties. On the flip side there is a remix by Nowhere Men (a.k.a. Lee Fisher of Mother fame).

Heat is Mike Dearborn’s first release in over a year and 2 words best describe this EP... dark and hard! The title track Heat, the EP’s best track in Mike’s opinion, is a shift back in the direction he is famously known for. The synth line is simple and very effective. It will give any sound system a full work out. Puppet and Poizon take things a step in the darker direction. Both tracks carry a heavy kick coupled with intense arrangement of sounds and noises. Peak time tune’s for sure.

ROBERT HOOD Who Taught You Math 12"

With a remix from Tiga and on the flip is Drone.

(NRK Sound Divison)
Another bomb from the Audio Soul Community remixes project, Rob Mello's No Ears Mix is an outstanding electronic house mix that will appeal to those currently turned on by the analogue house resurgence. On the flip Jamie Anderson remixes Freefalling and knocks out a killer chunky locked groove mix that is a real
hypnotic grower and will appeal to those of the more tougher musical persuasion.

MASTER H Magic K 12"
(Soma Records)
Soma's French playboy and connoisseur of fine house music returns to the label. Master H is the flamboyant producer and designer DJ who is setting Paris and New York alight with his unique brand of funky flavoured house. He is a rising star on the scene and a DJ of excellent technical ability. As a prelude to his debut longplayer Thirteen Soma we are re-releasing his classic cut, Magic K. This track was originally released on the B side of Master H's debut Soma single Mayflower, the track proved to be a sleeping giant and went onto be charted by DJ's across the board. For it's re-release he’s beefed up the production on the electro tinged house monster.

NOEL NANTON The Issue 12"
(Honchos Music)
Another bomb from Noel Nanton, taken from the sublime fu.cha.cul.cha album. Original Mix alongside a killer tribal remix from Pilavin & Zimbardo (Sondos/Distraekt), you need this 12" in your life!!

AMP FIDDLER Basementality 12"
(Genuine Article)
Amp Fiddler comes from Detroit, USA. A world class keyboard player, Amp has played with George Clinton, Prince, Herb Alpert, Maxwell, Was Not Was, Lucy Pearl, Moodyman and Carl Craig, to name but a few. Most recently Amp has played keys for Kenny Dixon Jnr (Moodyman) on the majority of his remixes and for Carl Craig on his remix of Recloose’s Ain’t Changing. Amp is also currently writing and recording with Grand Central’s Only Child. Amazingly Amp’s remarkable pedigree is only now resulting in the self-written, produced, played and sung Basementality EP. Born from a DIY ethic stemming way back to a legendary motor-city musical tradition, the tracks for the EP were written and recorded in his basement studio over the last 12 months. Kenny Dixon’s JAN mix just adds another masterful dynamic to complete a stunning EP of Detroit basement house music with soul.

YEN SUNG Do you 12"
(Atlantic Jaxx)
Aimed more at the Chill-Out lounge, Parisienne Café or the bedroom, Do You is best described as filmic trip hop with a love story melancholy. The flip-side sees two deep house Dub remixes created by Felix (Basement Jaxx) to translate the track to the underground clubs or just as happily at home. Bumpin mellow melancholy…

VARIOUS Futurism 2x12"
(City Rockers)
At last a vinyl outing from the must have City Rockers electroclash compilation Futurism (CITYROCK3CD). With tracks from Peaches, Golden Boy & Miss Kitten, Alpinestars, Louie Austin, Chicks On Speed, Zombie Nation and more. All packaged up in a baby pink sleeve.

STARGAZER Integalatic Buffer EP 12"
(DIY Discs)
DiY return, yet again, with another quality house record of the highest order. Stargazer, who released the much praised Deeper on Ideal last year. As an added bonus Lo-Motion compliment the EP with a slightly tougher remix of U Don’t Know. Lo-Motion is Jay Cowley (To-ka Project) and Gavin Belton (Littlemen) who have previously had releases together and separately on Drop Music, Guidance, Silver Network, Tilted, Funky Piranha, Yoga and Procreation. Stargazer return with more releases very soon!!!

TOM NOBLE Kind In The Night 12"
(Laws Of Motion)
Tom Noble has made a name for himself, following a couple of low key releases on Laws of Motion, fusing elements of reggae, funk and Brazilian music with a unique London twist. Tom’s music is the rarest of things, i.e. truly individual! With an album in the can, and remix demands piling up, it is time to reveal the whole story. Winning support from the nu-jazz scene for its acoustic 2-step beauty, Kind in the Night is just the next instalment of a bigger story. Featuring the vocals of Anthony Elvin, and a remix from Misa Negra this four tracker has both 2-step dancefloor and nu-jazz appeal.

(Out Of The Loop)
Leftfield soul music, to warm the cockles of ya heart... After the success of last years The Ghetto E.P. (which was hammered by Harvey, Gilles Peterson, Mark Nola and Rainer Truby), Cai now tackles the Stevie Wonder classic Black Maybe. Featuring the superb vocals of Miss Malone, the fresh sounding original version is like Philadelphia's Soulaquarians crew pushing the boat out, with it’s stuttering beats and minor keys. Russ Gabriel turns in an understated slo-mo mix with soft guitars and Rhodes while Shades Of Black come with a house re-rub that should rock garden parties and dancefloors alike.

The Whip It EP is the third release from Tropism, one of the most exciting new labels from Paris. Here young artist Sebastien Barquet delivers an extremely cool house track with it s funk & bounce that kicks the dancefloor in a very good way, take that you filtyhy dancefloor. Sebastien is also known as Quizz and has a track featured on Battle Records from Paris. The second track features a more US house style remix from Clément Vache, label owner and resident at the infamous ‘Kill the DJ’ party at the Pulp in Paris. Over on the flip is a relaxing, down tempo ballad with hot Rhodes and sweet Billie Holliday vocals. B2 is for the late night jokers and after-party goers. Check the huge bass and you’ll understand why the dancers are going mad!!!

DJ URBAN Bang That Shit Up 12"
The Chicago sound of Jackstar goes from strength to strength as you can hear from this truly slammin’ remix EP. Bang That Shit Up was 1st released on DJ Rush’s Kne’Deep label in 2000. The track was well received with rave reviews and was subsequently licensed to one of Dave Clarke’s mixes. This time Urban rounds up 3 of his Chicago mates to do damage on what was already a classic track. This new package comes in the form of 4 mixes. First up we have the original mix, which is followed by DJ Bam Bam’s remix. DJ Nehpets, who’s releases on Dance Mania / UC & GTI have all been Ghetto winners, drops a mix to give the EP the original ghetto sound. DJ Smash aka Kevin Cunningham rounds things off.

NICK JONES / BIG MOSES Dreaming / Believe In Me 2x12"
(Dance Wicked)
Dance Wicked unleashes a killer double pack for all the soulful headz out there! This limited edition double pack sampler includes two songs from two of NYC’s most prolific producers, namely Nick Jones and Big Mosses. Originally released on the Shelter imprint in NYC these two slamming songs have been lovingly re-mastered and pressed extra loud for all the DJs out there. These songs are regularly played by the likes of Timmy Regisford, and Dreaming is one of Little Louis Vega’s (ummm, Masters At Work) biggest songs of the moment. The songs featured here are currently going through the remix mill and will be available on Dance Wicked Records in the near future!

TIEFSCHWARZ Ral 9005 3x12"
(Classic Music Company)
Everyone’s favourite house label Classic (well its one of ours, alright!), take things to the next level and release their first artist album proper. After releasing over fifty groundbreaking singles, three compilations and two damn fine mixed CD’s, one by Doc Martin (CMCCD104) and one by label co-owners Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon (CMCCD103), Classic has successfully established itself as one of the most innovative and inspirational UK based house labels. So when it came to do the first artist album it had to be something rather special... Having released two amazing singles on Classic, Thru A Little Window and Hello Again, Tiefschwarz release their debut album Ral9005, formed in 1996 by two brothers - Ali and Basti Schwarz - who have been successful DJs for over a decade. Peter Hoff, who runs the Benztown studios in Stuttgart, completes the Tiefschwarz production team. The name, incidentally, is German for 'deep black', a mixture of their last name, Schwarz, and their love for deep house. Incidentally, the title of the album refers to the Pantone reference for the colour Black. Regarded in their native Germany as Teutonic alternative to Masters At Work, it’s easy to see why such analogies have some resonance, when you name check the plethora of established artists Tiefschwarz have brought their inspiring remix and production skills to: Ultra Naté, Byron Stingily, Jam & Spoon, Randy Crawford, Masters At Work, Earth Wind and Fire, Shakatak, Mousse T, Boogie Solitaire, Jon Cutler, and Rick Astley! They are at present busy in the studio remixing Jolly Music for Illustrious, Isolée for Classic and Agent K for Laws of Motion. The unique, intricate and powerful production techniques of Tiefschwarz are clearly evident while listening to the album, but it was their first two singles on Classic that initially blew people away. On Up, featured on the first EP Thru A Little Window, proved to be a benchmark record for Classic and one of THE house records of last summer. There are very few brilliant house albums released every year and Ral9005 has all the elements to become a definite classic. The album effortlessly combines elements of house, jazz, soul and garage in a sumptuous array of exquisitely executed tracks. Ral9005 covers the spectrum -- from the kick-ass house tracks (On Up, No More Trouble, Acid Soul and Schwanitz), and the soul-filled deep house and garage tracks (You, Never, City Sounds and Music), through the playful excursions into Nu-jazz (Mars) and broken-beat (Nix), this is an amazingly accomplished album that will work it’s way into your subconscious and charm the very pants off you. He’s a pants wearer, he wears pants…. CD to come.

HOME & GARDEN Sexuality Remixes 12"
(Classic Music Company)
Originally released on Home & Garden's Song From The Last Days Of Sanity EP last year, it now gets a re-release with some bad ass remixes, courtesy of Tim Shumaker, Rob Mello and JT Donaldson. Home & Garden's Tim Shumaker has recruited the vocal talents of the illustrious DJ Colette, as seen on the cover. Colette is a member of the infamous DJ super group Superjane, along with DJ Heather, Dayhota and Lady D. The irresistibly catchy, down-tempo version of Sexuality has been transformed into a floor-filling smash, with a mix for every occasion. The A-Side features Home & Garden's Drum Lingo Mix. Tim completely reworks the original, upping the tempo but managing to retain all it's subtle hooks. Slick, soulful house with jazzy undertones that definitely has that San Fran air about it... beautiful! On the flip and JT Donaldson, of 2nd Shift and Undercover Agency fame, jacks the groove, adding a stupidly infectious rumpa-funk bass line to massive dance floor effect. Finally, Rob Mello adds his No Ears magic, a bumping, dubby, groove, that still retains the subtly of the full vocal.

VARIOUS Notts Landing Sampler #3 12"
(DIY Discs)
The third and final sampler taken from the DiY CD compilation Notts Landing (DIY56CD). All tracks are exclusive to this compilation. A1. DiY - Wanna Go Back? Another collaboration by the DiY collective and this time it’s Digs & Simon DK. Simon is perhaps the daddy of DiY, known for his infamous DJ sets and has previously recorded together with fellow DiYer Nag as Mayo. Digs normally DJ’s and records with long time partner Woosh, as themselves. Next up Souldoubt - Devotion Alix has been producing as Souldoubt for 3 years, since buying himself a studio and taking some time to work it all out. He records for his own Freaked label (on its 6th release) and has also released on Drop Music, Bosh and Viva. And on the flip Atjazz - This What Make Me Tick Martin Iveson, aka Atjazz, released his first EP in 1996 on his own label Mantis Recordings (a label he co-owns and runs with Andy McCandless). His debut album, That Something, was released on DiY Discs in 1998. His second album, Labfunk, was released in June last year. And to finish things off, its Hot Toddy - Maroon One half of Paper Recordings’ well-known Crazy Penis outfit, Chris Todd has previously recorded under this moniker for Neon Heights.

MITCH IGAN Windy City Theme 12"
(Windy City)
These are the first recordings for Chicago production team Mitch Igan and Sue Perior. Windy City Theme is full of mellow chords, smooth vocals and percussion with a dancefloor vibe by one of Chicago's finest, Mitch Igan. On the flip his recording cohort Sue Perior gives the track a more pumping version.

SUPERMODERN Chuck The Moose Off The Roof 12"
Attention Dance classics & real Garage music lovers, this is essential - the fifth release from Ransom records sees the boys Benjamin & Urbano ripping up the much sought after African Blood by the German band Supermax. Over on the flip there is a filthy re-edit of a rather well known Modern Romance track.

A promo only release that features Classic's Tiefschwarz brothers delivering quality remixes of this Ibiza-esque vocal house cut. Do not miss!

THE DROYDS Take Me I’m Yours 7"
Lets just say the B side has an lot to do with Duran Duran and the genre they are calling Electroclash, we like it, nuff said...

MASTERS AT WORK Back Fired 10"
SuSu are proud to present a limited edition 10 inch with picture cover of MAW’s Backfired featuring the vocals of India. The A side features Joey Negro’s Club Mix, which has already been a huge hit on the MAW label in the US. Over on the B side however, we have Joey Negro’s Dubfired Mix, which is completely exclusive to this release and will not appear elsewhere. A limited edition release!

PEACE DIVISION Do you See Me? 12"
Peace Division go deep, druggy and dirty in this low-slung tribal groover on Prolekult. Building steadily from a low and trippy percussive groove, the original mix of Do You See Me? on the A gains momentum with the introduction of carefully timed drum loops and bass swells before Rachel Brown’s sexy drawling vocals add extra punctuation and form to the cut. Over on the flip and Ssh provide a firing tech-tinged remix twisting and cutting up the vocal amidst intense FX and throbbing bassy rumblings. Phatness comes as standard.

Airtight takes a trip to Chicago for this release, Give Chase b/w Mise En Place (Remix) by Mazi and Nathan Larsen. The work of Mazi Namvar and Nathan Drew Larsen should come as no surprise to staunch supporters of Airtight as the two Chi-Town-dwelling members of the Gourmet crew have flexed their musical muscles for the label on many occasions - namely on Nathan’s beautiful Standing Still cut (which featured mixes from Mazi as Audio Soul Project) and on Mazi’s heavy remix of the seminal Mushrooms. The pair get together here to provide two deep, techy, clicky tracks with Give Chase on the A bringing together solid, swingy Mazi beats and a subtle, soulful vocal on the breakdown all underpinned by big, warm bass sounds while Mise En Place (Remix) hands the emphasis over to Larsen whose shuffly beats and jerky click rhythms make for something very deep and special. The profound shit.

(Deep Freeze)
Previously only available in a very limited quantity this is another slice of superbly judged dub-house with a deep disco flava. Produced by Matthew Drummond of DC Project (Subconscious / Undaground Therapy) & the Papa Washington Trio (Paper) along with Barry Reeves. Do It 2 Me hinges around some excellent live bass playing which gives the groove a fluid funkiness whilst the drums deliver all the necessary punch to drive the dancefloor. Add to this the reggae derived vocal samples and you have another deliciously tasty hypnotic house cut for your box. Over on the flip Philadelphia’s Moody B drops the tempo slightly but beefs up both the beats and the bass and adds some irresistible go-go bells and percussion to the mix. Things build beautifully until a classic disco melody provides the icing on this cake that has been baked lovingly for mass consumption on the tastiest of dancefloors!!! Dig in!

NICK JONES Dreaming 12"
(Dance Wicked)
The first release from the much-anticipated Dance Wicked Records comes from seminal New York producer Nick Jones. The track was originally released on Shelter 157 Records NY and is still regularly getting plays from Timmy Regisford. The track has now been lovingly remixed by Reticulate, a.k.a. Leslie ‘Bang the Party’ Lawrence and Lasse Illington, giving us two new styles for this great song. The A side is a more dancefloor orientated mix with a heavy bass-line and acid tingles... this rocks on any club sound system. The more soulful mixes on the AA side move at a more gentle pace but work equally well to a more mature crowd.

BOOBJAZZ Midnight Ceremony Suite 12"
(Dance Wicked)
Here are the amazing long awaited remixes of last years fantastic Midnight Ceremony Suite by Germany’s Boobjazz, and these guys certainly know how to produce ‘Jazzy Deep House’. The new remixes on this record come from three of the scenes hottest stars and are cleverly re-constructed. First up are two mixes from Freaks, a.k.a. Luke Solomon and Justin Harris. The first is the Main Boob mix, staying true to the original but adding some messed up beats... a funky monster of a mix! Then there is the Funkthatboob mix, which has harder beats and a funkin bassline, one for the tech heads out there. Finally we have a mix from Fabric and Wiggle’s Terry Francis, who’s mix is a lovely housey affair, toughening up the original sound to make an even more dancefloor friendly remix that is simply superb.

FUMI Let’s Fly 12"
(Out Of The Loop)
Fumi is the alter ego of Manchester's Jersey Street. Let's Fly is off-kilter house with quirky keys that are reminiscent of Blaze's more wigged-out work, jaunty Afro snares and slowed-down female vocals (you thought it was a bloke, didn't you?) Upon the B side is Inception - a Latin-tinged extravaganza which sounds like several excited Cubans and a slightly dusty George Benson dancing with increasing vigor on a summer's evening. It's really rather good.

VARIOUS Notts Landing Sampler 1 12"
(DIY Discs)
The first sampler taken from the new DiY CD compilation Notts Landing (DIY56CD) features four cuts from the Notts Landing CD: all tracks are exclusive to this compilation and are among the finest these artists have to offer. Inland Knights - De Turbulence. Inland Knights are Laurence Ritchie and Andy Riley, a production duo and members of the Smokescreen sound system. As well as DJ’ing all over the world, they also own and record for the popular Drop Music label and have also released EP’s for Large, 20:20 Vision and Double-Down amongst others. DiY - Dance Factory. A collaboration by the DiY collective: Woosh and Nag (who also records as Kinky Joe on DiY and Swag, as well as engineering for the likes of The Exploited(!) and many other bands at Nottingham’s Square Centre Studios - home of DiY). Neon Heights - Show You The Stars Neon Heights is Cal Gibson and Simon White; two Nottingham based DJ’s who started their own label (Neon Heights) 2 1/2 years ago after meeting on an engineering course and realising that they shared a love of real disco, deep house, funk and soul. They have had releases on their own label as well Afro Art and Glasgow Underground and have remixed Bent, Cass & Slide and A Million Sons.

VARIOUS Notts Landing Sampler 2 12"
(DIY Discs)
Four more cuts from the Notts Landing CD: Nail - It’s A Fine World. Nail Tolliday has a history of producing great house records for Classic, DiY, Remote, etc. but is probably more widely known for his partnership with Simon Mills as Bent. Toka Project - Fallen Angel. The three members of Toka project are Steve Walker, Jay Cowley and Andy Riley (of Inland Knights fame). To date Toka have released on Naked Music, Drop Music, Guidance Recordings, Yoga, Viva, Earth and Jef K’s Paris based Silver Network. DJ Profile - Surreal Picnic. On the flip, DJ Profile is one of Charles Webster’s many monikers; others include Furry Phreaks, Sine, Symetrics and Presence. Charles is probably best known for his Presence guise and the accompanying album, All Systems Gone, which sold 80,000 copies, spawned 3 top 75 singles, was voted best album of the year in countless publications and made top 10 in the US Billboard chart with the single Sense of Danger. He has just released an album as Charles Webster (the first time he has released under his own name) on Peacefrog, Born on the 24th July, (PF097CD) ow working on the second Presence album, due later this year. Come Closer by Schmoov! are John Buckby, Andre Bonsor, Owen Rowe and Andrew Tytherleigh. A group of Nottingham residents who met back in 1997 whilst playing in a funk band and decided that they wanted to try and combine the live performance aspect of a band with the sounds that house music incorporated. Their critically acclaimed debut album was released late last year (DIYCD50).

ECHOMEN Truth Pt 1 12"
(Hooj Tunes)
Producers Chris Scott and DJ Anton Fielding (Lexicon Avenue / Mooncat / Indaba / Nu Phunk Theory etc) have been responsible for some of the better club records of the last couple of years and Truth keeps the flag flying high. A memorable vocal from Cheb Stewart pays a nod to the eighties but the beats and baseline are pure house - 2002. Aside from the original, the Weekend World mix (disc 1) has been getting plays from the Deep Dish boys.

ECHOMEN Truth Pt 2 12"
(Hooj Tunes)
Second part of the Echomen’s 12" finds West Coaster Chris Lum going fat and P-funky, while things get a bit ‘Shoreditch / men in make up’ with Northern Lites’ jaunty workout on disc 2. They’re nice, all of them.

ELECTRIC SOULS Doos Groove 12"
(Electric Souls)
Electric Souls keep up the pressure with release number five and their third of the year and seemingly with an all-new 40-piece orchestra!!! Side A kicks off with the full on attack of Doo’s Groove, a sinister bassline and percussion groove that is then layered with Hammond keys and brass section before the vocal finally kicks in. Acid House Afro! Doo’s Marimba Beats closes Side A that is one for the mix, a real tripped out groove. Over on the flip we have the dancefloor stomper On The Funk riding on a great bassline, funky guitar riff, and male vocal. Closing the package we have Love Rockin which is full of Prince flavours and this one is pure body rockin!

(Classic Music Company)
‘For those looking for the future of House, it's here, and once again it's from Chicago’ Muzik Magazine
Stop! And take the time to inventory the inside of your mind... Where U At? Everyone's favourite DJ is back to unleash another bomb upon the dance floor. Where U At? is the first single taken from his forthcoming album Square-dancing in a Roundhouse, released on Classic later this year. Featured on the single are three different versions of Where U At? The A Side features Where U At, Now?, a funky-ass interpretation of the original version, with a groovy-ass horn section adding that Latin flavour to some off the edgiest, jacking beats you'll hear this winter. Fusing elements of house, funk and black punk, Where U At, Now? features Derrick's full vocal post-apocalyptic diatribe, over some ruff-ass beats. Like Nitzer Ebb meets George Clinton at a Salsa evening.... just watch the dance floor erupt! The flip features the BHQ Now Dubb, for those more adventurous DJ's that like to take things a bit further, and if you wish to take it further still, there's the stripped-down slamming raw BHQ Revisionist History Edition... only for the headstrong!

RESET An Afternoon With Steve Edwards 12"
Miles Hollway and Elliot Eastwick aka Reset, are no strangers to the dance music industry. This is their latest 12" single. he track is called 'an afternoon with steve edwards', mainly becuase that is how long it took steve to lay down this ace vocal. We like it a whole bunch and we love the new Paper sleeves, sold.

(Afro Art)
Here we have a reminiscence of those far off days of big tunes and big soul rooms from Ashley Beedle and Marc Woolford. A classic Black Science Orchestra moment that has been given a brand new '80's style’ mix (a la Prelude) with the A side sounding as if it could have been the finale for any Caister Soul Weekender, a real down on the floor oops upside your rowing boat head nodding boogie. One play of this will bring back happy plastic palm tree memories to the ‘Dad’ house contingent at your local disco. You can be sure this is going to be a big hit. Already a big hit in its previous original (refer to Nice & Urlich Vol 1) and Farley & Heller mixes, this 1980's style boogie mix is bang on value for money, and has the usual excellent Afro Art label artwork too.

Nu Mood Orchestra Nite Food EP 12"
(Statra Recordings)

Nu Mood Orchestra consist of two talented young Swedish producers Jan Lutgebaucks and Erik Svahn (also record as YMC) who spend their time making spectacularly beautiful house music together somewhere on the edge of the Baltic Sea. With tracks out on such labels as Yoshitoshi, Alola, Glasgow Underground (as YMC) and here under their Nu Mood guise on New York’s Statra Recordings. 3 lush deep house grooviers to warm the cockles of ya heart.

TIGA & ZYNTHERIUS Sunglasses At Night 12"

This limited edition 12" contains two remixes, one by Medicine 8 and the stunning Blue Sunglasses Tom Middleton re-edit that fuses the track with New Order’s Blue Monday.

PERCY X Afterplan EP 12"
Glasgow based Tony Scott is the highly talented DJ and producer Percy X. This release again shows the different moods and styles of the X-Man. The title track Afterplan is a supreme example of Percy's sound right now - a driving rhythm is underpinned by a heartbreaking string which will melt the heart of the toughest dancefloor. This track is high quality techno fuel and is destined to be in the boxes of a cross section of DJ's. On the flip, we get a slice of Feel It, a wicked euro electro loop gets put through the Percy groove mincer for a prime time performer. Finally No SU is a vintage, grinding Percy X cut aimed directly at the dancefloor. On the whole a fantastic package of technophunk.

VARIOUS Peaches & Prunes 12"
Limited (1000 copies) two-track EP. Track one is a painstaking remake of a Ron Hardy re-edit of a little known 80’s Italo Disco cut, Peaches And Prunes by Nightlife Unlimited. A big track at Chicago’s legendary Musik Box lovingly recreated in a modern studio for maximum fidelity. More 80’s electronic disco on the flip, MBO Theme from Klein & MBO, not as well known as their big hit Dirty Talk, but just as fantastic!

FREEFORM FIVE Perspex Sex Remixes 12"
(Classic Music Company)
Classic released the original of Perspex Sex earlier this month(VCMC44) and is already a 'hit' in Jockey Slut and is getting props across the board: described as 'genius' by Ashley Beedle, 'brilliant' by Craig Richards and 'fantastic' by Stuart Patterson. Perspex Sex has been picking up props all over the joint. These new stupendous remixes come from bonafide electronic genius Ewan Pearson and New York left bank funkateer Maurice Fulton. The A-Side features Ewan's Hi-NRG stormer of a reworking, making full use of DJ Bang's sultry sexy ass vocal, Ewan adds some nu beat energy and a heavy slab of camp 80's Italian disco complete with cowbells!! The flip features Maurice Fulton's deeper, textured, organic, remix complete with scattered jazz keys and the baddest drum programming you'll hear this side of Xmas, a truly astounding take on the original. These remixes look set to out do the original. BOMB ALERT!

PS Don’t You Want Me Wet? 7"
Very LIMITED one-sided 7inch single combining Princess Superstar and The Human League. Daft but brilliant!

KEITH TUCKER Searchin 12"
(Dis House)
Famed electro producer Keith Tucker (Aux 88 / Puzzlebox etc.) presents the fresh sound of his new vocal house / techno imprint Dis House Records with 2 versions of Searchin’. The A-side version is a mesmeric combination of experimental groove construction and accessible vocal performance - truly a collaboration of man and machine in the fullest sense!!! The music is alien funk exemplified being an otherworldly house & techno amalgamation whilst the vocal performance is both heartfelt and soulful. Hard to describe but this has to be heard to be believed! The B-side is a remix by none other than Strand (Frictional / Delsin etc.) that continues the futuristic fusion vibe and high standard of the original although in his capable hands perhaps the mood is lighter and the feel funkier still.

(Friends & Family)
J&R Productions (a.k.a. Josh Lowe & Robert Evans) take us on a West Country house journey of the highest quality. The first departure Change pulls you along deceptively picking up momentum as you stay on board. Some strong percussion and a solid bassline pass through the synths, which in turn start playing with the jazz tinged guitar melodies. The vocals then insight you to dream a little while your journey proceeds to the next port of call - all change please! The second outing is Virus For Fears and infectious this certainly is, with a groove that is easily caught. The unstoppable dub style bassline leads you across the shaking percussive landscape, down into the valleys of warm keys & whisking you up to the peaks with just enough guitar licks & vocal stabs to see you right to your chosen destination. On The flip G Verses Q-Bass is one to keep you firmly on the track. G is playing live bass & he's certainly on the right line, connecting with some sparky high hat & snare patterns to keep this ride at a good pace. Showers of chords & a sprinkling of vocals will take you right back to bass! Let There Be House is the final route issued by J&R, a sample driven vehicle taking you on an urban trip dedicated to true house music. We can say no more than climb aboard this class 4/4 loco & see where it takes you. How can you resist not jumping aboard? J&R Productions have also just released a single for San Francisco's Imperial Dub label.

DON CARLOS Hot One 12"
(Afro Art)
The latest offering from the Afro Art stable is by Italy’s infamous Don Carlos and close friend / musical collaborator Riky Tee on keys and flute. Hot One, which can only be described as funky, energetic, jazzy, percussive and orgasmic even, is presented here in three different versions. The A side is a flute laden Italian Latin jazz house monster that is sure to be on everybody’s play list this summer. On the flip we have two other worthy versions that do exactly what they say... going deeper and more tribal assisting this Afro beating Latin House stomper to hopefully do rather well! Already on the top DJ's must have lists this has been getting full support from the likes of Ben Watt (Lazy Dog) Joey Negro, Danny Rampling and has already been licensed out twice to compilations before it’s proper release.

KUSHI & PAPA DEEP Chicago Underground 12"

Label boss Matthew appears here again as Papa Deep and is joined by Kushi from Glasgow’s very own Kushi Records and Music for Pleasure. A -side Chicago Undaground is an upbeat infectious groove packed full of funky guitar licks, chunky percussion and nostalgic disco vibes that is as simple in it’s construction as it is in it’s dance floor effectiveness! On the flip What Goes Around is a much more low slung affair with bass and guitar that subtlety tease as they gradually build in complexity while a light and airy

TOP CAT I Need A Freak 12"
(88 Records)
Far in the northeastern most regions of Manhattan (aka Spanish Harlem), Alex Young (aka TOPCAT) slaves away in his studio; answering the door for no one except Spanish food deliveries. In his previous days he worked for the band, Luscious Jackson as their tour DJ and studio handyman. Producing 2 tracks for Luscious on their last album Electric Honey, he got a running start before beginning his own project... Drawing his knowledge from years of spinning dirty funk music, Topcat has created his own version of the Sexual Harrasment electro classic I Need a Freak. This track combines slick 80’s funk and acid house bass lines to give the dance floor what it’s been begging for. Washington D.C. based vocalist Tall One comes correct on the vocal giving the song the seediness it deserves. Moloko’s Mark Brydon lays down a Morris Day / Chicago house influenced rocker on the flip.

THE U.B’S Body II Body 12"
(Eectrik Souls)
The U.B.’s return with another varied 4 track EP oozing with soul, funk and their most dancefloor orientated yet. Side A kicks off with Body II Body, a wicked disco / soul groove with an awesome vocal and those great early eighties synths, a real boogie tune. Next up is Bump & Dilly, quite simply a mad psychedelic funk groove. On the flip we have Body Bait, a funky Afro percussive monster with a wicked bassline, some ace brass sections and great vocal harmonies making this another big dancefloor tune. Don’t forget to check Body Beats, an essential DJ Party tool to round off the package nicely.

Grab 'em quick as they won't be around for long. vocal hits, all treated with delirious dub effects.

MIDNIGHT MIKE Round & Round 12"
The original version of Round & Around (produced by Sonovac’s Mike Silver) sounds like a long lost cousin of Dinosaur L’s Go Bang, a dirty dub disco not disco house cut with strong influences from the early eighties Downtown New York no wave / disco scene (Konk, ESG, Liquid Liquid etc.). Deadpan vocals from Violetta (aka Thea Djordjadze), an internationally exhibited artist based in Cologne, rub up against lithe rhythm guitar and bongos (percussion provided by Flesh favourite Zongamin). Will be very popular with admirers of Output/Playgroup, DFA/The Rapture, Gomma/Headman etc. The Version strips everything back, giving the track a more electronic, minimal German feel that will appeal to fans of Playhouse, Ladomat, Kompakt etc.

CHRIS J Twilight EP 12"
This outstanding EP includes 3 tracks of the warmest, deepest tech house that we've heard in a long time. 3 cuts set you right. Includes Twilight, Your Love and Milk & Honey. Think early 16B and Elegia (F Comm). Not a dance floor screamer by any stretch but so intelligently produced and lovingly crafted you'll enjoy every micro-second of listening pleasure, coolly swaying to the tech influenced, ambiently lush grooves.

Legendary Belgian producer Marcos Salon drops this all-new 12" release on the Statra Twelves imprint. Flashback: the Mid-1980's. It was the era of New Beat, and for once Belgium could pass for the centre of the musical universe. At this time Marcos had teamed up with DJ Marc Grouls and recorded as In-D, a collaboration which would lead to three remarkable 12-inches on Subway Records. In the early nineties he started working with pirate radio DJ's Sven Van Hees and Paul Ward as Liaisons D. The tracks He Chilled Out (a influential Detroit classic - just ask Derrick May) and Sirenas aroused the interest of R & S Records, and Marcos adopted the pseudonym Outlander. As a solo artist, he has produced an impressive amalgam of refined and hybrid techno and was responsible for a number of innovative releases on the mysterious T(est) Z(one) series and brought crowds to sheer ecstasy playing live at raves in Europe and America. Off the radar for some time now, Salon chose Brooklyn's Statra to resurface and the man delivers Angel, (3 mixes) a deliciously sexy Springtime bongo driven house groover guaranteed to get dance floors off!

BROZA FRAGG Camillo’s Night Bar 12"
Lyons based French group Broza Fragg aka Frederic Pasquier and Teddy G and licensed from Teddy G’s Jazz-Up Records. They forge a warm & colourful fusion of acoustic and electronic music, cleverly combining elements of classic funk, deep house & Latin flavours to come up with tracks as unique in delivery as they are in sound. As well as theoriginal mix of the title track there is also Le Shaman and a Nu Mood Orchestra mix of Camillo’s Night Bar.

DOC MARTIN Sounds You Can Feel 3x12"
(Classic Music Company)
For those who have been unaware and out of the loop for the last 15 years or so, Doc Martin (real name: Martin Mendoza) began his mission on the decks back in the Summer of 1986. With strong roots in funk and disco, his focus on house music was triggered while playing the clubs and warehouses of late 1980s San Francisco. One of the main founders of the strong West Coast dance scene, Doc has always been a master of mixing the crowd with the music. This triple pack vinyl release will be followed by Doc’s stunning CD mix. Eleven tracks are included here by artists such as Blaze, Aaron Carl, Ray Mang and Nathan D’Troit, Danmass, Aaron Carl.

BLAKE Saturday Night (rmx) 12"
"HIT!" Chris Duckenfield Jockey Slut
Front of the box tackle and make no mistake. Blake’s distinctive vocal stylings are remixed firstly by Sir Ewan Pearson and chum Al, who concoct an early ‘80s Prelude type groove in which to immerse Blakey boy. It’s all raw synths and pokey beats, and it’s lovely. Then San Francisco’s best export, Joshua, who just visited Auckland, gets to grip with the B-side, employing typically hefty beats and basslines while riding an irresistibly fat analogue riff with slinky Rhodes over them. It’s the perfect backdrop for the catchy lyrics.

WARP 9 Cannone 12"
(Laws Of Motion)
Two cuts delivered from new Laws of Motion signing, Warp 9 - a slightly harder techno flavoured offering from the label, but irresistibly funky nevertheless. The A side cut Cannone is a hard, hypnotic slice of Carl Craig meets Kirk De Giorgio with relentless filtered groove that has got the likes of Deep Dish and Ian O’Brien asking for a second copy already. The flip side features an edit version of Cannone which has a soulful, techno twist and then Waltzers is a much more funkier, organ driven house groove that still has a subtle tinge of tech house thrown in for good measure.

KENNY HAWKES Play The Game 12"
(Music For Freaks)
The illustrious Kenny Hawkes is back with a new production: Teaming up with South African chanteuse Louise Carver, Kenny has produced a damn fine slice of sleazy hypnotica. The full vocal version of 'Play The Game', featured on the A Side, is truly outstanding, a chugging, dark disco groove with a b-line reminiscent of Coco, Steel & Lovebomb's Feel It. Which all set the stage for Louise's superb vocals, with Billy Ray Martin style intonation - this is how Sophie Ellis Bextor wish she could sound! There will genuinely be murder on the dance floor when you drop this.

(Tropism Music)
Very groovy house on super cool new French label Tropism Music courtesy of Simon et Bolivar and the suburbs of Paris. The EP starts off with Did I Know, a stunning soulful deep house track with a classic old school vibe and a vocal to die for, which is followed by And I Know which has more of an electro vibe with funky off beats. On the flip we have Samy, an Afro funk groove that steps into a West London style broken beats mood, while Samy Beat does what it says, keeping the break minimal and the electro vibe throughout. A nice debut.

THE LITTLE MEN Crackin Up EP 12"
The Littlemen are Steve Lee & Gav Belton, Drop Music recording artists & DJ regulars as part of the infamous Smokescreen sound system. They have had previous releases under their Littlemen guise on Drop Music (VDROM022 & 24) and had two exclusive tracks featured on the Procreation (PROCD1) compilation album of the same name last year. Here on the Crackin’ Up EP they have come up with a much more commercial funky dance sound than we are used to from their Drop Music excursions, but this is not a negative, quite the opposite in fact. They have added some exotic new flavours to the funky deep house pie and it tastes mighty damn fine! Get Down has a trademark bouncy bassline still in there but features much funkier, jazzy style drop downs and a killer guitar riff too boot. Think Greens Keepers meets MAW. Next up is Line Dancin, which starts with slap bass and is then under cut by a groovy half speed dub style bassline while nice trumpet stabs frequent throughout the track. Finally To the Ground takes us back to the ’88 sound of Chicago with a b-line that’s reminiscent of Block Rockin’ Beats and then comes the funky guitar riffs & a catchy vocal that exclaims the title.

BLACK SCIENCE ORCHESTRA Headspace Lullaby Pt 2 12"
(Afro Art)
Featuring the talents of Marc Woolford (Soul Drummers, The Man, Dance Freak and Jazz Room fame) and Ashley Beedle (X-Press 2, Ballistic Bros, etc.) The first part of Headspace Lullaby is right in that head-nodding, beard-stroking boho bag while the second part is a percussive dancefloor monster with an off the wall drum solo to inspire many a jazz dance revival contortionist. This is a very memorable and cinematic piece of music and a perfect signing off for one of the most important ‘dance’ acts of the nineties.

ASHLEY SLATER Private Sunshine 12"
(Afro Art)
Ashley Slater is the former front man of Freakpower and Private Sunshine is taken from his new album Big Lounge, here in an exclusive vinyl only remix version commissioned by Ashley himself. This beautifully crafted, string laden Batucada was inspired after a wild night at a Brazilian friends party and is tailor made for those early evenings / after party moments and is also suited to radio play, think Coldcut’s Autumn Leaves. On the flip Afro Art’s in house DJ & producer Paul Murphy completely strips the track down adding a massive dark bassline, sinister sounding strings, some Roma Gypsy musicians and piles on the percussion to speed the track up halfway through, tipping his hat to one of his favourite musical styles.

OCTAVE ONE Blackwater (Strings mix) 12"
"The Best Record I Have Heard In Two Years" Dave Hill (Nuphonic)
The final part of Octave One’s enormously popular Blackwater single is here... and what a version! Basically it has been transformed into a techno symphony thanks to London's Urban Funk Orchestra - 10 live strings players with attitude. The live string arrangement was added to the track and the results were mixed down by Octave One at a London studio...think Unfinished Symphony if it had been made in Detroit. Completely stunning!

DANCEFREAK The Prayer 12"
(Afro Art)
Here we have Luke Howard and Marc Woolford’s second offering as disco hedonists Dance Freak, add in Lurleen Lewis’ gospel vocals and we have The Prayer, a string laden percussive vocal monster. As a massive bonus, NY legend Benji Candelario has given the track his remix treatment. Awesome!

(Freerange Records)
Freerange newcomer Trevor Loveys should need no introduction, having put out some of the deepest house, breaks and jazz infused chillout on a whole bunch of labels for the past 5 years. His prolific output has seen his productions released on UK based labels such as Nuphonic, Alola, Pagan and Frontroom Recordings. Trevor's first EP for Freerange sees him come up trumps with Moondust, a rolling, dubby house tune with plenty of analogue stabs and bubbling lead lines. On the flip, You Know It explores the deeper side of cut up breaks without sacrificing the funk whilst the solid groove remix turns the track into a trippy, big beat mash-up!! A sure-fire winner on the crazier dance-floors out there!

KIM ENGLISH Been So long 12"
This breathtaking rendition of Anita Baker's Been So Long originally produced by Frankie Feliciano and sung by Kim English and now remixed by Wamdue has eluded so many! Originally lost amongst a huge US remix package, these awesome mixes have been surgically removed and are presented here in all their glory as a well deserved full 12 inch single release featuring the previously unreleased Wamdue Speakeasy Dub. It is also comes on tasty limited edition clear vinyl. Real cream of the crop stuff!

AFRIX Kigali Warriors 12"
Afrix is French born producer/DJ Nicolas Laugier who has been based in London since 1998. He is part of the Collision Art group, alongside writer Cyrille Martinez and painter Joffrey Ferry, and have so far had four exhibitions organized in London and Marseilles which have all been funded by French government schemes and French designer Agnes B. His debut release was released on Acid Jazz Records back in 1999 under the moniker NLE, which was followed by a 12 released on Chilli Funk Records in 2001 as Afrix featuring Dorothee Ningabire, which received airplay and support from diverse jocks such as Danny Rampling, Gerry Leiseight, Bob Jones, Rocky, Diesel, Mark Wilkinson and many others. ‘Kigali Warriors’ continues the Afrix sound and legacy of the rich French-African heritage, merging it with a London vibe to create this deep, post tribal afro groove with the unique vocal talents of Rwandan singers Dorothee Ningabire & Faith Uwubutatu. ‘Kigali By Night’ meanwhile re-arranges the original into 3 parts, building with the drums and guitar, then the vocals and climaxing with effects. Sure to be a winner on the more discerning dancefloors around the world! Track Listing: A. Kigali Warriors B. Kigali By Night

GREEN FRIDGE Whole Damn World 12"
(Laws Of Motion)
Laws Of Motion explores the more house / techno side of things with this old school 4 tracker. It sees the welcome return of long time Restless Souls producer Luke Duke McCarty, who has produced tracks as Green Fridge for Estereo, remixed Modaji, Uschi Classen on Earth projects and has co-worked with Willie Washington. T1 opens the EP with an old school firing techno house track, think Planet E back in the day (don’t ya love that expression!) or eighties trax, with just a hint of Ibiza crowd pleasing to go. Dreams, carries on the techno theme, but takes it. On side b And Love Dub is more of the old school, but on a deep house / garage tip. And love is a funky and more soulful version, more on the New York garage tip. Laws Of Motion continue to sit between genres, but there’s something here for everyone. Test pressing have found support from Ian O’brien and Carl Craig and the more soulful house tracks receiving support from the Body And Soul Boys in the US and the Ministry Of Brown in NZ.

BIS FACT 2002 EP 12"
(Optimo Singles Club)
Latest single on Glasgow’s Optimo Singles Club (the label from the people behind the legendary Optimo club). Here Scottish indie darlings Bis surprise their fans and go all electro-pop on a timely (post 24 Hour Party People) EP, featuring covers of four of the band’s favourite Factory Records releases. Side one features a great electro / vocoder version of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart and a killer, tough, driving house reinterpretation of New Order’s Hurt. On the flip ACR’s Shack Up gets a complete overhaul… a real killer track. Closing the EP, we have Section 25’s Looking From A Hill Top, a great version featuring electro / freestyle beats and some great dub effects. Will appeal massively to fans of City Rockers etc.

DIFFERENT GEAR A Little Bit Paranoid 12"
(City Rockers)
"I guess this little baby will be very big on the dancefloor" Laurent Garnier
"Cool" Andrew Weatherall
"Cool!" Jon Marsh
A Little Bit Paranoid, featuring the vocal talents of clubland legend Phil Dirtbox has been an anthem at the monthly City Rockers shindig 21st Century Body Rockers for months. Its cool!

KAORI Good life 12"
Originally thought to be an illegal remix of the Inner City anthem but unfolds to be a rework from Berlin techno baron Thomas Schumacher featuring the silky vocals of Japanese starlet Kaori. In 1999 Japanese session singer to the likes of UFO and Jazztronik gave a demo tape of her cover version of Good Life to Thomas Schumacher who was visiting Japan. At that time Thomas was recording his second album Electric Avenue and he jumped at the opportunity to use Kaori's vocal to produce his own cover of this legendary cub anthem. Since then the track got bootlegged on a white label EP entitled Berlin Trax Vol3 with Paul Hardcastle and demand for this classy unusual mix has never stopped. Finding it’s way into the boxes of Deep Dish, Todd Terry, Gilles Peterson (forthcoming on his new Trust the DJ comp), Doc Martin, Jazzanova, Danny Krivit, Pete Tong (playing on his Radio1 Miami broadcast) and even Kevin Saunderson has been closing his sets with this nugget.

CHARLES WEBSTER Ready Remixes 12"
Taken from the stunning album, Born on the 24th July (PF097CD), Ready gets the remix treatment from the hugely respected Matthew Herbert who has become somewhat of a remix guru of late. Herbert’s cut is a seven minute four to the floor quirky club tool in true Herbert style which still retains the sweetness of the original vocal and will be huge with the more discerning DJ’s. There is also a three and a half minute Herbert radio edit. In addition Charles Webster pulls out the widely acknowledged Presence guise for a more commercial mix using the full vocal (sung by New York legend Terra Deva). Wicked!

LOUIE BALO Guiding Light 12"
(NRK Sound Division)
Originally out on Jeannie's Liquid Sound Lounge label, Guiding Light gets a reissue with brand new mixes from Pete Heller. Spread over two discs, Heller has turned in a 'Main Mix' and a 'Dub' alongside a handy Space-A-Pella. Spacious and dubby yet with a tight, electronic edge, Pete’s mixes should be holding their own in any DJ sets. Also included on this package are two of the Original mixes; the almost broken beat skip of the Saturn Dub and the beautiful Moon Dust Mix that graced DJ Garth’s Nite:Life 07 (NRKMX07) mix comp last year. On this, the first 12" is Pete Heller’s 2nd Floor mix plus Louie’s Saturn Dub and Cosmic-A-Pella.

(NRK Sound Division)
As above – Pete Heller’s Space-A-Pella, Moon Dust Remix and 4th Floor Dub.

THE SOULSAVERS Beginning To See The Dark 12"
(City Rockers)
Ian Glover and Richard Machin (Soulsavers) are a pair of flatlining romantics from Stoke On Trent. Beginning to See the Light is a mysterious six track affair. Love is a delicate, symphonic, stuttering of a broken click-track heart featuring the crackled mournful vocals of cult LA based vocalist Josh Haden (Spain) contrasting the desolate isolationism painted by its stark electronic backdrop. Rumblefish on the other hand will lift and spin you round by your senses, a potent adrenal kick of purest smack jazz, laced with an addictive motor neurone infesting pulse that is breathtaking. The EP also includes the instrumental track Black Dahlia and a host of top notch rejiggery courtesy of Theboylucas, Broadway Project and Simian.

FUNKY FRESH FEW Heavy Hittin 12"
(Grand Central Records)
"great NYC rap with female attitude" ( DJ Mag )

(Low Pressings)

MASTERS AT WORK Our Time Is Coming 2x12"
(Tommy Boy / Concept)
The brand-new Our Time Is Coming is only the second Masters at Work album (they also released a full-length as Nuyorican Soul in ’97) and the first since 1993. As expected, it’s a doozy. All the elements that define MAW are here: the cross-cultural melting pot of sounds and rhythms reflecting the streets and people MAW call home; the expansive interplay of live musicianship and studio electronics; the collaborations with artists both home grown and revered. Packed with club hits and future hits alike. Nineteen tracks spread across 2 discs.
